What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the surgical correction of excess skin, fat, and loosened muscle in the upper or lower eyelids. It may be performed for aesthetic reasons as well as functional ones (sagging that limits the visual field).

The eye is the most expressive part of the face — its rejuvenation transforms the whole face.

In upper blepharoplasty, the incision is placed within the natural lid crease; in lower blepharoplasty, just below the lash line or inside the lid (transconjunctival). Scars become nearly invisible in a short time.

II
Techniques

Method selection.

The most suitable technique for the patient is selected among the main approaches below:

01

Upper Lid

Removal of sagging skin from the upper eyelid. Corrects tired/heavy appearance and opens the gaze.

02

Lower Lid

For bags, dark circles, and laxity. When needed, combined with fat transfer.

03

Combined

Upper and lower lids addressed in the same session — a holistic approach to the periorbital area.

III
Candidates

Who is a candidate?

Generally common in individuals aged 35+, but in certain hereditary conditions it can be applied at earlier ages.

  • Sagging and hooded appearance on the upper eyelid
  • Bags and dark circles on the lower lid
  • Puffy periocular appearance especially in the morning
  • Sagging lids that make makeup difficult or cause it to smudge
  • Upper lid sagging enough to restrict the visual field

Note: Conditions such as dry eye, thyroid disease, or eyelid twitches must be evaluated before surgery.

IV
Recovery

Process timeline.

First 3 days

Swelling and bruising. Cold compresses and head-elevated position are important. Eye drop use begins.

Week 1

Sutures removed (upper lid). Bruising fades and becomes concealable with makeup.

Weeks 2 – 4

Full return to social life. Eye area appears rested and rejuvenated.

Months 3 – 6

Final result — scars become nearly invisible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries.

When can I return to normal life? +
Comfortable at home immediately; comfortable in social environments within 7–10 days. Makeup can begin from the 2nd week.
Are the results permanent? +
Upper lid surgery generally shows lifetime effect. Minor laxity may return to the lower lid over time but the original condition does not recur.
I wear glasses, can I still have the surgery? +
Yes, it is safely applied in both myopic and hyperopic patients. Additional evaluation is done if dry eye is present.
When can I wear contact lenses? +
Usually after the 2nd week, as determined by the doctor.
Will scars be visible? +
Upper scars sit in the lid crease; lower scars at the lash line — hidden within natural lines. They fade substantially within 6 months.
